The day I landed to Kathmandu

The day I landed to Kathmandu, after completing my Master’s degree from Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland, I could not believe my eyes. The streets were silent, no vehicles could be found running on the streets, there was not even dust in the wind. I asked a old women who was selling, Noodles and cigarettes near the street, “What’s going on?” She said, “Nepal is on strike”. Bingo- I greeted myself, Welcome to Motherland! Now, Instead of bombarding with more questions to an old lady, I just became more selfish on my journey and started to walk about 25 kilometers. Wow, what a heavenly place. No vehicles, no traffic, not even a dust in the wind and after all it all looked like a true green revolution, I thought.

Running down the memory lane, I imagined, Two years ago, the same old lady was selling Noodles and cigarettes in the same place. Oh my lord, what am I doing? I should talk positive stuffs- Our so called “New Nepal” is really new, we have now new Prime Minister- My 79 years old grandmother will remember his name, and why not? The surname is the proud country’s name, isn’t it? (Just checking, hopefully we don’t have another PM before this article is published.) Wonderful, this is positive stuff, Now Soon I started to figure out how much above the poverty level we are among other’s nation. Are we top in poverty? Wow, I am excited to be in the top! The difference was realized when I visited the public bathroom. We really do take care of cleanliness, don’t we?

After couple of days, the time came to meet friends- I discovered they seem to be very happy and satisfied. One of them said, “We don’t care if our government cuts eight hours of electricity time and again, we don’t care if some of the political parties go on strike anytime, just for one simple reason- We love our nation!” Wow, what a statement- A statement many of the political leaders should use in their speech- applause please!

Another friend asked to one of my Doctor friend who just returned with me from foreign land, “Why do you come back to Nepal?” He said, “Work here or work there is the same, everywhere- but I came to help not my country but to help my child who is suffering from Diarrhea and many others child who are suffering too.” Now, it was my turn and I was expecting the same question but one of the friend he asked, “When are you going back?” This surprised me- finally I jokingly said, “I wish I would have never come but I came to see if my friends are not suffering from ‘Kidnapping syndrome’ or ‘Political syndrome’ or ‘ are they drowned because of incessant rainfall?’.”

Who am I?

The event took place in the Trivuwan Airport in Kathmandu. A young handsome looking, he seemed like very important rushed into this airport, jumped the queue, went straight to the counter and showed his passport and the ticket.

The gentleman at the counter said, “Sir, please stand in the queue”. The person replied, “No, I’m really in hurry I need to go.” The gentleman again said, “Please wait in the queue”.

The man said, “Do you know who I am?” The gentleman at the counter picked up the microphone and said, “There is a man here who does not know who he is, can somebody help him?”

The biggest problem for all of us is that, we all are in the same state as of this young man. The question, “Can somebody help him”?

The question justifies that every body is existing in this mother earth without knowing Nature of who he/she is. We are making life without understanding the fundamentals of whom we really are; we are trying to create a life of unknown. There is confusion.

The very first question that comes in my mind is that, “who am I”? It is one of the most profound and very important questions one has to ask in their life.

How can you know some one else life without knowing who you are? Charles Darwin gave the theory of “Natural Selection”, but he forgot to mention one theory of “Nature of Existence”. In this theory, every person should ask-who am I? Am I a student, Am I a teacher, Am I a political leader? Or Am I nobody.

The first and foremost thing one should do with their life is to ask these questions to understand who they really are. If we do not know what the nature of our existence is, we live by accident.

There is no reality in living by accident. It appears that we are living by accident, by assumptions and by opinion. And the zest of finding the reality appears. Some times there might be a feeling of no reality.

The question, “Who am I?” exits inside our body, in our mind. Once we remove the surface nonsense example, I am very famous singer, artist, son of great political leaders etc. The removal of such surface nonsense will give us the answer to the question, “who am I?”

When there is nothing remaining in your answer, that is the biggest thing. The answer you were searching for comes from this nothing. The question does not come from mere curiosity but straight from the heart. The answer to this question can some time tear people, once you know the reality, you will stick to it.

One day, a friend asked me the same question and I replied him saying, the words of Gautama Buddha which states, “It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours.

It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell.” This is what Buddha said, and this is what I say to those who ask who am I, “I am what I really Am., and not what others make of me..,”

On tarai

This is in reference to the article, "On cricket, tarai and India" by Arun Gupto (Mar 9). Indeed it is not because of our close tie with India we act differently and do not want to see "dhotis" or feel ashamed when we speak with them, it is because we are egoistic. It cannot be changed easily.

However, it is the people of both sides who miss or forget courtesy. It will take time to see a secular, multicultural Nepal. The treatment Nepalis living in India get is the same as Indians living in the tarai get. It is because our mind does not allow us to think broadly.

New Nepal

Every where there is fight, every corner of the city, every streets and every parts of the country. We are very good at doing this. We are fools are we will be fools always in our entire life. We are fools because we are ruled by our great ministers. They always take the benefit of us, we do not know what we are doing. We do because we think our leaders are right. We are walking our own land in vain.We do not know what is right and what is wrong. We do some task because some times we even feel we are doing correct. Welcome to Nepal, the land of its own. The land owned by our kings and minsters. Who says we have a democracy in our country. Saying does not mean that we really have the privilege of democracy. The word is very vast and deep in itself but we do not know what we are talking about here. The word is so vast that we do not know the real meaning of this. Let me give you one example. In Europe, I saw one accident in the middle of highway road. There were two person driving a car suddenly they happened to get an accident. It was not the mistake of either of them. Or they assume that it was not their mistakes. What happened was nothing. There were no men around them taking interest in what has happened with them. There were no fights in between themselves either and there were no such arguments only thing one of them did was he called the cops and the cop came They were just couple of them in their van. The whole situation was handled with due care. Nothing happened ! Now Let me compare this example with the example in our country. What is that we do when some body hits our van, or car or may be bike or something. We shout at him. We are into great arguments we think we are superior and we always assume that we are superior then our opponent. Why do we do such thing ? Is it because of our nature ? Yes to some extent. We are fools are we will remain fools forever. We will only understand that we are grown and mature person only when we stop burning tires, and stop doing these silly bandha, strikes and following them who do not deserve to be called as minsters in our country. Let us be matured human being and let us show some self respect in any situation. As i have already written about this- Prime minister Girija is dead and he is really dead because he shows to his country men that he is sick and wants to get some emotional sympathy that is totally false. Let us not believe in our leaders but let us believe in ourselves. We do not need any government, we do not need any political system but we need our mental attitude to make our country proud. Let us make it proud by "doing" rather than "speaking" nonsense.
